In the shadow of Thy wings will I take my refuge. (Psalm 57:1
In a severe nervous breakdown, Harry Emerson Fosdick had the razor to his throat when his father happened to be nearby, and only his fathers' crying "Harry, Harry!" stopped him from taking his life.
Nervous breakdowns from overloads and stress and hopelessness should be taken seriously. Some of historys' great people have been through these shadows. Young Tolstoi, utterly disheartened, decided to kill himself. Mark Twain, 30 years old, put a loaded pistol to his head but lacked the courage to pull the trigger. William James, the noted teacher at Harvard, in his dispirited youth, almost committed suicide.
Unable to sleep, people can do some strange things. We need help greater than our own. Just as around our bodies is a physical universe from which we draw our physical energy, so around our spirits is a spiritual Presence in living communion with whom we can find sustaining strength.
Those who have
been through the inner hell of neurotic agony - the waves
of melancholia, the obsessive anxieties, the desire for
suicide and all the rest - are some of the best people to
minister to those enduring such agonies.
Souls have visited with us here...
